2006 JESUIT JUBILEE – A VISION, A MISSION, A PRAYER

TOGETHER IN MISSION 2006 - A Reflection From Cardinal Roger Mahony
Blessed is the one who regards the…poor.” — Psalm 41:2

This year we launch our annual appeal–Together in Mission - with a particular emphasis on “Mission.” As Catholics, we often use the word “mission” along with the word “Gospel.” The Gospel mission, as we know, is to love one another, to “go and make disciples,” to care for the poor among us - and that is precisely what Together in Mission does.

Here in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, we support the Gospel mission not only in word, but in deed. We do regard people who are poor, and through Together in Mission’s allocations and the rebate program, we all are blessed.Jesus assured us that the poor would be with us always; so our mission is not accomplished, but with the support of the Almighty, neither is our mission impossible.

We are a compassionate people, disciples of Jesus, who was himself poor. Our challenge lies in continuing our legacy of generosity. I am asking you again this year to demonstrate your regard for people who are poor. Please join me in supporting the Gospel mission through Together in Mission 2006; and in answer to your evident regard for the poor, may God continue to call you blessed.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. Also, we will conduct our annual Together in Mission in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. As always, what you give should be given in gratitude for what God has given to you. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Many of our customs surrounding critical illness come from antiquity, and yet attitudes have certainly changed. Death was an all-too-familiar presence then, and people tended to see it as a natural and unavoidable part of life, not a personal catastrophe. People tried to review their lives, settle their affairs, say farewell to their dear ones, and welcome the deathbed vigils and prayers that assured them of God’s love and forgiveness.
What people most feared was sudden death. It was dreaded and never discussed. The faithful filled the catacombs with consoling images of the good shepherd carrying the sheep to safe pasture, or the faithful in glory seated at banquet tables. The prayer texts from the time are consoling and positive, and many inspired our modern prayers. The care of the dying flowed directly from Roman pagan practice; it was home-based and family-centered. Pagans didn’t especially fear death, but they were terrified by the dead. Christians, on the other hand, consoled their sick with psalms of joy and faith in the Resurrection. The goal was to assure the sick person of God’s love, and that the ties that bind the dead and the living would endure.

What is your true calling in life? Is it to help other people? Is it to develop the talents that God gave you? Is it to love and support your family? While all of these may be true for us we don’t often recognize that our deepest calling, or vocation, is to give glory to the God who creates, saves, and sanctifies us. In the First Letter to the Corinthians Paul exhorts us to “do everything for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

The one person who did this better than anyone else was Jesus Christ. So it comes as no surprise that Paul also tells us to “be imitators of Christ.” How did Jesus give glory to God? He sought not his “own benefit but that of the many, that they might be saved” (1 Corinthians 31:33). Today’s Gospel gives us a challenging example from Jesus’ life. Jesus saves a leper from the stigma and suffering of leprosy. Afterward the leper joyfully returns to the community and tells everyone the good news about what Jesus did for him. As a result Jesus finds that he now experiences the exclusion that the leper had once known. He can no longer “enter a town openly” and must remain “outside in deserted places.”

IMITATORS OF CHRIST: Most of us will probably never cure anyone from leprosy or any other disease. How, then, are we to imitate the Christ who worked such wonders? We are called to give glory to God by using our own gifts with courage and generosity, as Jesus did. We are called to seek not our “own benefit but that of the many.” risking our own pride, status, time, money, or pleasure for the common good. We are called to tell everyone the good news about what Christ does for us-and through us-every day. Then everything we do will be for the glory of God. Copyright © 2005, World Library Publications.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE: Esta semana recordamos a san Valentín, obispo y mártir.

¿Amar y sostener a tu familia?

4And when they could not offer him unto him for the multitude, they uncovered the roof where he was; and opening it, they let down the bed wherein the man sick of the palsy lay.
5And when Jesus had seen their faith, he saith to the sick of the palsy: Son, thy sins are forgiven thee.
6And there were some of the scribes sitting there, and thinking in their hearts:
7Why doth this man speak thus? he blasphemeth. Who can forgive sins, but God only?
8Which Jesus presently knowing in his spirit, that they so thought within themselves, saith to them: Why think you these things in your hearts?
