SOCIAL SERVICES:
– The L. A. City has an employment program called SNAP recently it was renamed by Mayor Villaraigosa to L. A. CITY WORKS. This program allows people to gain entry-level employment with the City without taking a test. It was created to offer substantial career and employment opportunities for underutilized groups in the City. Participants are hired to work full-time as exempt employees in lieu of regular, entry-level civil service positions. Upon successful completion of a training period and probationary period, these employees may transition into regular en-try-level civil service jobs such as Maintenance Laborer, Custodian, Gardner caretaker and Clerk typist. The participants receive a training in readiness training, skill development and case management services from community agencies. After they are referred to the Personnel Department and made available to City Departments for employment. Interested person should call 1-800-367-2562 or 311 and they will be referred to a WorkSource Agency to register.

Mark 8:11-13

11And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, asking him a sign from heaven, tempting him.
12And sighing deeply in spirit, he saith: Why doth this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, a sign shall not be given to this generation.
13And leaving them, he went up again into the ship, and passed to the other side of the water.
Mark 8:14-21

14And they forgot to take bread; and they had but one loaf with them in the ship.
15And he charged them, saying: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.
16And they reasoned among themselves, saying: Because we have no bread.
17Which Jesus knowing, saith to them: Why do you reason, because you have no bread? do you not yet know nor understand? have you still your heart blinded?
18Having eyes, see you not? and having ears, hear you not? neither do you remember.
19When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took you up? They say to him, Twelve.
20When also the seven loaves among four thousand, how many baskets of fragments took you up? And they say to him, Seven.
21And he said to them: How do you not yet understand?

22And they came to Bethsaida; and they bring to him a blind man, and they besought him that he would touch him.
23And taking the blind man by the hand, he led him out of the town; and spitting upon his eyes, laying his hands on him, he asked him if he saw any thing.
24And looking up, he said: I see men as it were trees, walking.
25After that again he laid his hands upon his eyes, and he began to see, and was restored, so that he saw all things clearly.
26And he sent him into his house, saying: Go into thy house, and if thou enter into the town, tell nobody.

27And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi. And in the way, he asked his disciples, saying to them: Whom do men say that I am?
28Who answered him, saying: John the Baptist; but some Elias, and others as one of the prophets.
29Then he saith to them: But whom do you say that I am? Peter answering said to him: Thou art the Christ.
30And he strictly charged them that they should not tell any man of him.
31And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the ancients and by the high priests, and the scribes, and be killed: and after three days rise again.
32And he spoke the word openly. And Peter taking him, began to rebuke him.
33Who turning about and seeing his disciples, threatened Peter, saying: Go behind me, Satan, because thou savorest not the things that are of God, but that are of men.

34And calling the multitude together with his disciples, he said to them: If any man will follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

1Now faith is the substance of things to be hoped for, the evidence of things that appear not.
2For by this the ancients obtained a testimony.
3By faith we understand that the world was framed by the word of God; that from invisible things visible things might be made.
4By faith Abel offered to God a sacrifice exceeding that of Cain, by which he obtained a testimony that he was just, God giving testimony to his gifts; and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
5By faith Henoch was translated, that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had testimony that he pleased God.
6But without faith it is impossible to please God. For he that cometh to God, must believe that he is, and is a rewarder to them that seek him.
7By faith Noe, having received an answer concerning those things which as yet were not seen, moved with fear, framed the ark for the saving of his house, by the which he condemned the world; and was instituted heir of the justice which is by faith.
Mark 9:2-13

2And his garments became shining and exceeding white as snow, so as no fuller upon earth can make white.
3And there appeared to them Elias with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.
4And Peter answering, said to Jesus: Rabbi, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.
5For he knew not what he said: for they were struck with fear.
6And there was a cloud overshadowing them: and a voice came out of the cloud, saying: This is my most beloved son; hear ye him.
7And immediately looking about, they saw no man any more, but Jesus only with them.
8And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them not to tell any man what things they had seen, till the Son of man shall be risen again from the dead.
9And they kept the word to themselves; questioning together what that should mean, when he shall be risen from the dead.
10And they asked him, saying: Why then do the Pharisees and scribes say that Elias must come first?
11Who answering, said to them: Elias, when he shall come first, shall restore all things; and as it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things and be despised.
12But I say to you, that Elias also is come, (and they have done to him whatsoever they would,) as it is written of him.
13And coming to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes disputing with them.

2And Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having with him three thousand chosen men of Israel, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
22And David answering, said: Behold the king’s spear: let one of the king’s servants come over and fetch it.
23And the Lord will reward every one according to his justice, and his faithfulness: for the Lord hath delivered thee this day into my hand, and I would not put forth my hand against the Lord’s anointed.

45The first man Adam was made into a living soul; the last Adam into a quickening spirit.
46Yet that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; afterwards that which is spiritual.
47The first man was of the earth, earthly: the second man, from heaven, heavenly.
48Such as is the earthly, such also are the earthly: and such as is the heavenly, such also are they that are heavenly.
49Therefore as we have borne the image of the earthly, let us bear also the image of the heavenly.

27But I say to you that hear: Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you.
28Bless them that curse you, and pray for them that calumniate you.
29And to him that striketh thee on the one cheek, offer also the other. And him that taketh away from thee thy cloak, forbid not to take thy coat also.
30Give to every one that asketh thee, and of him that taketh away thy goods, ask them not again.
31And as you would that men should do to you, do you also to them in like manner.
32And if you love them that love you, what thanks are to you? for sinners also love those that love them.
33And if you do good to them who do good to you, what thanks are to you? for sinners also do this.
34And if you lend to them of whom you hope to receive, what thanks are to you? for sinners also lend to sinners, for to receive as much.
35But love ye your enemies: do good, and lend, hoping for nothing thereby: and your reward shall be great, and you shall be the sons of the Highest; for he is kind to the unthankful, and to the evil.
36Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. Forgive, and you shall be forgiven.
38Give, and it shall be given to you: good measure and pressed down and shaken together and running over shall they give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you shall mete withal, it shall be measured to you again.
