The LORD secures justice and the rights of all the oppressed. — Psalm 103:6

“HERE I AM”: The scriptures for this Sunday focus our attention on the Lenten call to conversion. When God calls Moses by name in the reading from Exodus, Moses immediately responds, “Here I am!” and comes closer. He answers God’s call even though he is afraid and confused. In a similar way Christ calls each of us by name, especially in the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist. During the season of Lent he desires above all that we will answer, “Here I am!” and come closer to him. It is all right if we are confused or afraid. It’s even all right if we haven’t really listened for his call yet this Lent. Today’s scriptures give us a second chance to listen for Jesus’ call, to come closer to his voice, and to move farther away from sin in our lives.

BEARING FRUIT: How can we tell when we are responding to Jesus’ call? For that we look to the metaphor of the fig tree in today’s Gospel parable. Through the sacraments, the scriptures, and the Christian community, Jesus Christ-the gardener-has been cultivating the ground around us and fertilizing us in the hope that we will bear good fruit. Will we? Are we barren because our root system doesn’t grow deep enough to tap into real spiritual nourishment? Is our growth stunted by choices we are aking? Is our energy channeled into our healthy, flowering branches, or sapped by a hundred scrawny shoots? Do we turn in on ourselves and prevent the light of the Son from ripening what little fruit we bear? While the elect who are preparing for baptism scrutinize their lives to discover how Christ is calling them to conversion, all of us must scrutinize our lives as well. Those who are listening for Jesus’ call and turning to the sound of his voice will bear succulent fruit so the hungry can eat their fill. — Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. MARCH 17 IS ST. PATRICK’S FEAST… Green candles may be purchased at the rectory, or at the parking lot after the Sunday Masses. These candles are smoke-fee and are manufactured by the same company that makes our fine white candles.

This Collection makes possible the American Catholic Church’s global mission to combat poverty, provide relief and development, assist refugees and immigrants, and advocate for justice and peace in situations of conflict and neglect of basic human rights.

“AQUÍ ESTOY”: Las Escrituras para este domingo concentran nuestra atención en el llamado de Cuaresma a la conversión. Cuando, en la lectura del Éxodo, Dios llama a Moisés por su nombre, éste responde inmediatamente: “Aquí estoy” y se acerca. Moisés respondió al llamado de Dios aun estando atemorizado y confundido. De igual manera Cristo nos llama a cada uno por nuestro nombre, especialmente en los sacramentos del bautismo y de la Eucaristía. Durante el tiempo de Cuaresma lo que más desea el Señor es que le contestemos, “aquí estoy”, y que nos acerquemos a él. No nos preocupemos si estemos asustados y confundidos. Ni aun nos preocupemos si todavía no hemos verdaderamente escuchado su llamado esta Cuaresma. Las Escrituras de hoy nos brindan una segunda oportunidad para escuchar el llamado de Jesús, acercarnos más a él para poder escuchar su voz y alejarnos del pecado en nuestras vidas.

DAR FRUTOS: ¿Cómo sabemos que estamos respondiendo al llamado de Jesús? Para responder a esa pregunta busquemos la parábola de la higuera en el Evangelio de hoy. Por medio de los sacramentos, la Sagrada Escritura y la comunidad cristiana, Jesucristo -el jardinero- ha estado cultivando la tierra a nuestro alrededor y nos ha abonado con la esperanza de que demos buenos frutos. ¿Los daremos? ¿Somos estériles debido acaso a que nuestras raíces no crecen hasta la profundidad suficiente como para toparse con los verdaderos nutrientes espirituales? ¿Está nuestro crecimiento paralizado por las decisiones que estamos haciendo? ¿Se mueve nuestra energía dentro de nuestras ramas más saludables y florecientes, o se deja minar por cientos de retoños raquíticos? ¿Nos volvemos contra nosotros mismos e impedimos que la luz del Hijo haga madurar cualquier fruto, por muy pequeño que sea, que está comenzando a salir? Así como los Elegidos que se preparan para recibir el bautismo hacen un escrutinio de su vida para descubrir cómo Cristo los llama a la conversión, también nosotros debemos escudriñar nuestra vida. SEGUNDA COLECTA PARA LOS SERVICIOS DE AYUDA CATOLICOS: Hoy, tenemos una Segunda Colecta en favor de los Servicios de Ayuda Católicos. Esta colecta ayuda y apoya a las organizaciones de la Iglesia Católica que llevan a cabo iniciativas de ayuda y solidariad internacional. Sus programas incluyen servicios de socorro y reasentamiento para las víctimas de persecuciones, de guerras y de desastres naturales, así como también proyectos de desarrollo para mejorar las condiciones de vida de los pobres; defensa de los desposeídos, labor de paz y reconciliación para los que sufren de la violencia; y servicios legales y de apoyo para inmigrantes pobres.
“Vistos con los ojos de la fe, el niño hambriento, el creyente en la cárcel y la mujer sin agua limpia ni cuidados de salúd, no son temas a discutir, sino…..Jesús disfrazado.” Los sobres para los donativos se encuentran detrás de las bancas. Apreciamos su apoyo a esta importante labor de la Iglesia.
