For the Week of April 15 - 21, 2007

Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. — Revelation 1:18a

Thank you to all who made the celebration of Holy Week such a spiritually touching and spectacular experience. A special thanks is due to the Liturgy Leadership Committee and to all those who planned and carried out our liturgies. Thanks also to all those cleaned the church and did all of the thankless behind the scenes work. Thanks also to all those who prepared candidates, gave retreats, wrote and delivered reflections, put on plays, etc. etc. Thanks to all who helped celebrate that the Risen Lord has truly brought hope and new life to our troubled world.
Easter Blessings,
Fr. Mike

STAND AND BE COUNTED: NEW MEMBERS WELCOME
Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To so clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals.
We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptismal and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active, and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are always available at rectory office. Please complete one today if you would like to join our community. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

A MESSAGE FROM FR. ELI:
Dear friends,
Peace.
I am back in Weston, Ma. With the 10 other priests from different Jesuit provinces also back here, we have started our sharing sessions and then go back to the study of the constitutions of the Society of Jesus. Thank you so much for the wonderful 4 months and a half that I stayed at Blessed Sacrament. Truly, it was a blessed experience for me. I will always be grateful for the privilege of having had the chance to have met you all. I will always treasure the memories of people I met and experiences I had there.
When I left Weston for Hollywood last November, I did not know what to expect. Each of the priests in the program shared what blessings we asked the Lord for in our experiments. I simply asked that I be a blessing to the people and the people be a blessing to me. I was and am still awed at how things just turned out.
It had been an amazing 4 1/2 months for me. I was not anxious for I knew all is well and that all will be well as God had and has continued to show me in my life. But I did not expect things to be very very well. Surely, God continues to amaze me with His generosity and love. He took really well of me through the people I met there. I am happy, very very happy.
Kindly pray for me in my remaining one month and a half of tertianship. After this I go home to the Philippines for a new assignment at the Ateneo de Manila High School.
Keeping you all and the parish in my prayers.
God bless.
Fr. Eli Lumbo, S.J.

CARNIVAL 2007 - HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
– Volunteer your time. We can use your help soliciting donations, planning and installing decorations, setting up before the weekend event, preparing food, running the food, game & raffle booths etc. Whether you can spare the time to ask for donations now or you can help us for a few hours during the weekend itself we would be grateful for any time you can give.
– Contribute items We encourage you to request donations from local businesses that you frequent, and to ask your friends and families if they can help us. You can contact me for solicitation letters. Come to the party and enjoy We will send you more information thru the bulletin as the weekend draws closer but don’t forget that buying raffle tickets is one very important way that you can help defray the costs of planning the carnival to enable as much money as possible goes directly to help the school and parish.
– We encourage you to invite your colleagues, friends, and families to join us for the weekend. It’s more fun when you bring a crowd and it’s a greater way for prospective families to learn about the school and parish. A BETTER USE OF YOUR TIME: Learn to give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you’ll have no time for criticism of others. –Anonymous

Did You Know? Where do your kids go to have fun?
Protecting children from harm extends beyond the time that they are under your direct supervision. Know where your children spend their time when school is out or they are not in the house. Where do they gather and play with other kids? Are there other adults in the area? If so, who are they and what reason do they have in being there? Knowing the answers to these questions will help you to keep your kids safe even when you are not with them. For more tips on child safety, please visit: www.virtus.org. For particular help you may call: Mrs. Ava Haylock, Coordinator Protecting our Children Program, phone: (323) 467-4177, or Sr. Sheila McNiff, Director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: We return to some reflections on the rites of marriage with a consideration of a very similar rite that helped shape marriage customs. From the earliest centuries, we know that some Christian women desired to vow themselves to a celibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means everyone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others wanted to stay in the family home. By the fourth century, the church was celebrating the “Consecration of Virgins,” a rite performed by the bishop, and involving a “veiling” of the woman. It was looked upon as a form of marriage with Christ, partly because in the culture of the day a woman’s status in society was linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the consecration of virgins were exactly the same as the prayers and ritual for the consecration of a bride on her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave the bishop the opportunity to commend the virgin to the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone who tried to turn her from her commitment. Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second Vatican Council directed that it be revived and restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women have embraced this form of consecrated life. –James Field, Copyright, J.S. Paluch Co.

— Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
