DEPENDING ON GOD,“Getting by with a little help from our friends” is not an idea that began with the Beatles. Certainly the idea of “getting by with a little help from God” goes back at least to the first reading today from Exodus. How we get that help, however, is the key to this weekend’s scriptures.
No matter how inadequate Moses felt to the task God had given him, he persevered-even though he needed help from the people around him. The Israelites especially depended on God for freedom. The woman in the Gospel, desperate and destitute, had no one to depend on, but still she would not give up. She could not afford to bribe the unscrupulous judge, but she pestered him into weariness until finally he met her demands. We sometimes need to turn to others to help us through difficult times; but if we always turn to God, we won’t be disappointed, for our help, the psalm assures us, is from the Lord.

Did You Know? Test your knowledge of abuse prevention
True or false: It is common for both child and adult victims of sexual assault to wait some time before telling someone about the abuse. True. It is common for victims of sexual assault to wait some time before telling someone. When the person was assaulted as a child, he or she may wait years or decades. The reasons for this are numerous: victims may want to deny the fact that someone they trusted could do this to them; they may want to just put it behind them; they may believe the myth that they caused the assault by their behavior; or they may fear how other people will react to the truth. For more information on learning how you can help ensure the safety of children, please visit: www.archdiocese.la For particular help you may call: Mrs. Gloria Galarza, Coordinator Protecting our Children Program, phone: (323) 462-3646, or Sr. Sheila McNiff, Director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Sabe Usted?

16And he spoke a similitude to them, saying: The land of a certain rich man brought forth plenty of fruits.
17And he thought within himself, saying: What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?
18And he said: This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and will build greater; and into them will I gather all things that are grown to me, and my goods.

42And the Lord said: Who (thinkest thou) is the faithful and wise steward, whom his lord setteth over his family, to give them their measure of wheat in due season?
43Blessed is that servant, whom when his lord shall come, he shall find so doing.

19For the good which I will, I do not; but the evil which I will not, that I do.
20Now if I do that which I will not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
21I find then a law, that when I have a will to do good, evil is present with me.
22For I am delighted with the law of God, according to the inward man:
23But I see another law in my members, fighting against the law of my mind, and captivating me in the law of sin, that is in my members.

56You hypocrites, you know how to discern the face of the heaven and of the earth: but how is it that you do not discern this time?
57And why even of yourselves, do you not judge that which is just?
58And when thou goest with thy adversary to the prince, whilst thou art in the way, endeavour to be delivered from him: lest perhaps he draw thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the exacter, and the exacter cast thee into prison.

1There is now therefore no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh.
2For the law of the spirit of life, in Christ Jesus, hath delivered me from the law of sin and of death.
3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh; God sending his own Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh and of sin, hath condemned sin in the flesh;
4That the justification of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the spirit.
5For they that are according to the flesh, mind the things that are of the flesh; but they that are according to the spirit, mind the things that are of the spirit.
6For the wisdom of the flesh is death; but the wisdom of the spirit is life and peace.
7Because the wisdom of the flesh is an enemy to God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither can it be.
8And they who are in the flesh, cannot please God.
9But you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10And if Christ be in you, the body indeed is dead, because of sin; but the spirit liveth, because of justification.
11And if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead, dwell in you; he that raised up Jesus Christ from the dead, shall quicken also your mortal bodies, because of his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

22But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end life everlasting.
23For the wages of sin is death. But the grace of God, life everlasting, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

18For I know that there dwelleth not in me, that is to say, in my flesh, that which is good. For to will, is present with me; but to accomplish that which is good, I find not.
24Unhappy man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
25The grace of God, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, I myself, with the mind serve the law of God; but with the flesh, the law of sin.

1There is now therefore no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus, who walk not according to the flesh.
2For the law of the spirit of life, in Christ Jesus, hath delivered me from the law of sin and of death.
3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh; God sending his own Son, in the likeness of sinful flesh and of sin, hath condemned sin in the flesh;

6For I am even now ready to be sacrificed: and the time of my dissolution is at hand.
7I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.
8As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord the just judge will render to me in that day: and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming. Make haste to come to me quickly.
16At my first answer no man stood with me, but all forsook me: may it not be laid to their charge.
17But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that by me the preaching may be accomplished, and that all the Gentiles may hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
18The Lord hath delivered me from every evil work: and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
