CELEBRATION OF THE CENTENNIAL OF THE CALIFORNIA PROVINCE OF THE SOCIETY OF JESUS: During 2009, the California Province of the Society of Jesus will celebrate 100 years as a Province, serving the Western States of the United States. Our parish of Blessed Sacrament Church is one of many Jesuit Ministries of the California Province. The theme of the Centennial Celebration is “Responding to the Call of Christ: 100 Years and Beyond”. Several programs have been scheduled throughout 2009 and throughout the Province. One of the first major events of the Centennial Celebration is the visit of Fr. General Adolfo Nicolás, SJ, to the Province. Fr. General will also visit Blessed Sacrament Church on Sunday, February 1, 2009. He will preside and preach at a Multi-lingual Mass, at 11:00 a.m. After the Mass, he will be available in the school auditorium to meet parishioners and lay apostolic partners from the various Jesuit Ministries of Southern California. All parishioners, family and friends are welcomed and invited to this very special celebration.

SCHOOL NEWS: Blessed Sacrament School is having our annual “ Catholic Schools Week” during the week of January 27th through the 29th, 2009. We want to invite all parishioners, parents and friends of Blessed Sacrament School to view the work of our students in the auditorium.

VIRTUS WORKSHOP BLESSED SACRAMENT CHURCH

Blessed Sacrament Church is pleased to inform you that we have now two in-house Virtus Facilitators: Pedro Marroquin, Youth Ministry Coordinator, and Salvador Callela, School teacher. Both of them will hold The Virtus Workshop-for the Protection of Children- here at Blessed Sacrament in the school auditorium on Saturday, February 21 at 1:00pm. There will be two workshops, one in English and one in Spanish. These sessions will meet the Archdiocese requirement for volunteers and employees to be Virtus trained, all participants will receive a certificate at the end of the sessions. These sessions are open for all of our Liturgical Ministers, Catechists, School faculty, staff & volunteers, Social Services staff and volunteers; and Parish Personnel. People from another parishes may also attend. Please mark you calendars and plan to attend this workshop if you have not done so in the past. Please call the rectory office to sign up, giving your complete name, phone number, ministry, and session requested. Protecting our children is of prime concern for our parish.

STATEMENT of the President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago
“If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor; if the Lord does not watch over the city, in vain does the watchman keep vigil.” (Psalm 127, vs. 1)

The Bishops of the Catholic Church in the United States welcome this moment of historical transition and look forward to working with President-elect Obama and the members of the new Congress for the common good of all.  Because of the Church’s history and the scope of her ministries in this country, we want to continue our work for economic justice and opportunity for all; our efforts to reform laws around immigration and the situation of the undocumented; our provision of better education and adequate health care for all, especially for women and children; our desire to safeguard religious freedom and foster peace at home and abroad.  The Church is intent on doing good and will continue to cooperate gladly with the government and all others working for these goods.

The fundamental good is life itself, a gift from God and our parents.  A good state protects the lives of all.  Legal protection for those members of the human family waiting to be born in this country was removed when the Supreme Court decided Roe vs. Wade in 1973.  This was bad law.  The danger the Bishops see at this moment is that a bad court decision will be enshrined in bad legislation that is more radical than the 1973 Supreme Court decision itself.

In the last Congress, a Freedom of Choice Act was introduced that would, if brought forward in the same form today, outlaw any “interference” in providing abortion at will.  It would deprive the American people in all fifty states of the freedom they now have to enact modest restraints and regulations on the abortion industry.  FOCA would coerce all Americans into subsidizing and promoting abortion with their tax dollars.  It would counteract any and all sincere efforts by government and others of good will to reduce the number of abortions in our country.

Parental notification and informed consent precautions would be outlawed, as would be laws banning procedures such as partial-birth abortion and protecting infants born alive after a failed abortion.  Abortion clinics would be deregulated.  They Hyde Amendment restricting the federal funding of abortions would be abrogated.  FOCA would have lethal consequences for prenatal human life.

FOCA would have an equally destructive effect on the freedom of conscience of doctors, nurses and health care workers whose personal convictions do not permit them to cooperate in the private killing of unborn children.  It would threaten Catholic health care institutions and Catholic Charities.  It would be an evil law that would further divide our country, and the Church should be intent on opposing evil.
On this issue, the legal protection of the unborn, the bishops are of one mind with Catholics and others of good will.  They are also pastors who have listened to women whose lives have been diminished because they believed they had no choice but to abort a baby.  Abortion is a medical procedure that kills, and the psychological and spiritual consequences are written in the sorrow and depression of many women and men.  The bishops are single-minded because they are, first of all, single-hearted.

The recent election was principally decided out of concern for the economy, for the loss of jobs and homes and financial security for families, here and around the world.  If the election is misinterpreted ideologically as a referendum on abortion, the unity desired by President-elect Obama and all Americans at this moment of crisis will be impossible to achieve.  Abortion kills not only unborn children; it destroys constitutional order and the common good, which is assured only when the life of every human being is legally protected.  Aggressively pro-abortion policies, legislation and executive orders will permanently alienate tens of millions of Americans, and would be seen by many as an attack on the free exercise of their religion.

This statement is written at the request and direction of all the Bishops, who also want to thank all those in politics who work with good will to protect the lives of the most vulnerable among us.  Those in public life do so, sometimes, at the cost of great sacrifice to themselves and their families; and we are grateful.  We express again our great desire to work with all those who cherish the common good of our nation.  The common good is not the sum total of individual interests; it is achieved in the working out of a common life based upon good reason and good will for all.

Our prayers accompany President-elect Obama and his family and those who are cooperating with him to assure a smooth transition in government.  Many issues demand immediate attention on the part of our elected watchman.  May God bless him and our country.

CELEBRACIÓN DEL CENTENARIO DE LA COMPAÑÍA DE JESÚS, PROVINCIA DE CALIFORNIA: Durante el 2009 la Compañía de Jesús de la Provincia de California celebrará sus 100 años de Provinciado, sirviendo todos los Estados de la parte Oeste de esta nación. Nuestra Parroquia del Santísimo Sacramento es una de las iglesias pertenecientes a esta Provincia de California. El tema de esta Celebración Centenal es “Respondiendo al llamado de Cristo: 100 años y mas allá”. Muchos eventos han sido programados a través del 2009 en toda la Provincia. Uno de los mas grandes eventos de esta Celebración Centenaria es la visita del Superior General, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, S.J. a esta Provincia. El Padre General visitará también esta Parroquia del Santísimo Sacramento, el domingo, 1ro. de febrero del 2009. El celebrará y predicará la Santa Misa multi-lingüe a las 11 de la mañana de este día y después de la Misa, estará disponible para saludar y conocer a los parroquianos y dirigentes laicos pertenecientes a los diferentes Ministerios del Sur de California, en el Auditorio de nuestra escuela. Todos nuestros feligreses, familiares y amigos son bienvenidos y están invitados a asistir y participar en esta celebración tan especial.

TALLER DEL PROGRAMA VIRTUS

La Parroquia del Santísimo Sacramento se complace en informarles que cuenta con dos personas de la parroquia quienes han sido certificadas para impartir el programa Virtus: Pedro Marroquín, Coordinador del Grupo Juvenil, y Salvador Calle la, maestro de la escuela. Ambos darán el Taller del programa Virtus-para la protección de los niños-el Sábado 21 de Febrero a la 1pm en el auditorio de la escuela. Habrá dos talleres, uno en inglés y otro en español. Estos talleres cumplen con el requisito de la Arquidiócesis de Los Angeles para que todos los voluntarios y empleados de la Arquidiócesis reciban este entrenamiento. Todos los participantes recibirán, al final del taller, un certificado de asistencia. Estos talleres son abiertos para nuestros Ministros de Liturgia, Catequistas, Maestros, empleados y voluntarios de la Escuela, del Centro de Servicios Sociales y el Personal de la Parroquia. Personas de otras parroquias también están invitadas a asistir. Por favor marquen sus calendarios. Este taller es sólo para las personas que aún no lo han tomado. Por favor llamar a la oficina de la rectoría para inscribirse dando su nombre completo, número de teléfono, nombre del ministerio al cual pertenecen y preferencia de taller. Proteger a los niños es una de nuestras mayores preocupaciones aquí en nuestra parroquia.

DECLARACIÓN del Presidente de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos, el Cardenal Francis George de Chicago
“Si el Señor no construye el edificio, en vano se fatigan los obreros; si el Señor no protege la ciudad, en vano monta guardia el centinela.”(Salmo 127,vs.1)

Los Obispos de la Iglesia Católica en los Estados Unidos reciben este momento de transición histórica y esperan trabajar con el Presidente-electo Obama y los miembros del nuevo Congreso por el bien común de todos. Por la historia de la Iglesia y el alcance de sus ministerios en este país, nosotros queremos continuar nuestro trabajo por justicia económica y oportunidad para todos; nuestros esfuerzos para reformar las leyes de inmigración y la situación de los indocumentados; nuestra provisión de mejor educación y de cuidado de salud adecuado para todos, especialmente para las mujeres y los niños; nuestro deseo de salvaguardar la libertad religiosa y fomentar la paz en casa y en el extranjero. La Iglesia tiene el propósito de hacer el bien y continuará gustosamente cooperando con el gobierno y todos los demás trabajando por estos bienes.

El bien fundamental es la vida en sí, un regalo de Dios y nuestros padres. Un buen estado protege las vidas de todos. La protección legal para aquellos miembros de la familia humana esperando nacer en este país fue retirada cuando la Corte Suprema decidió el caso Roe vs. Wade en 1973. Ésta fue una ley mala. El peligro que los Obispos ven en este momento es que la mala decisión de la corte sea convertida en mala legislatura, más radical que la decisión de la Corte Suprema del 1973 en sí.

En el último Congreso, se introdujo un Acto de Libertad para Escoger que, si llevado adelante en la misma forma hoy, prohibiría cualquier “interferencia” en la suministración de abortos. Esto privaría al pueblo americano en los cincuenta estados de la libertad que ahora tienen de promulgar las modestas restricciones y regulaciones a la industria del aborto. FOCA obligaría a todos los americanos a subsidiar y promover abortos con sus dólares de impuestos. Esto contrarrestaría cualquier y todo esfuerzos sinceros de parte del gobierno y otras personas de buenas intenciones para reducir el número de abortos en nuestro país.

Se prohibiría la notificación a los padres y las precauciones de consentimiento informado, al igual que las leyes que prohíben procedimientos como el aborto de nacimiento parcial y protección a los niños que nacen vivos después de un aborto sin éxito. Se suprimirían las regulaciones a las clínicas de aborto. La Enmienda Hyde que restringe los fondos federales para abortos sería revocada. FOCA tendría consecuencias letales para la vida humana prenatal.

FOCA tendría un poder igualmente destructivo sobre la libertad de conciencia de los doctores, enfermeras y trabajadores del cuidado de la salud cuyas convicciones personales no les permiten cooperar en la matanza privada de niños aún no nacidos. Amenazaría a las instituciones católicas de cuidado de la salud y a Caridades Católicas. Sería una ley diabólica que dividiría más a nuestro país, y la Iglesia debe perseverar en su oposición al mal.

Sobre este asunto, la protección legal de los aún no nacidos, los obispos tienen un pensar con los católicos y otras personas de buena voluntad. Ellos también son pastores quienes han escuchado a mujeres cuyas vidas se han reducido porque ellas pensaron que no tenían más opciones que abortar un bebe. El aborto es un procedimiento médico que mata, y las consecuencias, sicológicas y espirituales quedan escritas en el dolor y la depresión de muchas mujeres y hombres. Los obispos son de un pensar porque ellos, antes que nada, son de un corazón.

La reciente elección se decidió principalmente por la preocupación por la economía, por la pérdida de trabajos y de hogares y la seguridad financiera de familias, aquí y alrededor del mundo. Si la elección es mal interpretada ideológicamente como un referendo sobre el aborto, la unidad deseada por el Presidente electo Obama y todos los americanos en este momento de crisis sería imposible de adquirir. El aborto mata no solamente los niños aún no nacidos, sino también destruye el orden constitucional y el bien común, el cual es asegurado solamente cuando la vida de cada ser humano es protegida legalmente. Agresivamente las políticas pro-aborto, la legislación y las órdenes ejecutivas permanentemente alejarán a decenas de millones de americanos, y sería visto por muchos como un ataque a la práctica libre de su religión.

Esta declaración es escrita a petición y dirección de todos los Obispos, quienes también desean agradecer a todos aquellos envueltos en política que trabajan con buena voluntad para proteger las vidas de los más vulnerables entre nosotros. Aquellos en la vida pública lo hacen, a veces, al costo de un gran sacrificio para si mismos y sus familias; y nosotros les estamos agradecidos. Nosotros expresamos de nuevo nuestro gran deseo de trabajar con todos aquellos que quieren el bien común de nuestra nación. El bien común no es la suma de intereses individuales; esto es adquirido por la labor de una vida común basada en la buena razón y la buena voluntad para todos.

Nuestras oraciones acompañan al Presidente electo Obama y a su familia y aquellos que están cooperando con él para asegurar una transición suave de gobierno. Muchos asuntos requieren atención inmediata de parte de nuestro elegido vigilante. Que Dios lo bendiga a él y a nuestro país.
