Did You Know? An Appropriate Way to Report Inappropriate Behavior
How should you communicate your concerns to someone who may be behaving inappropriately with children? The “I” message is a simple way to reframe what you want to say so that the listener hears you speak of your feelings and concerns rather than hearing a complaint against him- or herself. The “I” message, simply diagrammed, says, “I feel [feeling] when [situation] because [reason].” For example, you can say, “I feel anxious when you drive a child home alone after religious education classes, because that could put you or the child in a potentially risky situation.” It is a much more constructive approach than saying, “You shouldn’t be driving children home alone because it is against the rules and puts them in danger.” For particular help you may call: Mrs. Gloria Galarza, Coordinator Protecting our Children Program, phone: (323) 462-3646, or Sr. Sheila McNiff, Director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Sabe Usted?

Did You Know? Know Your Kids’ School Parents and guardians have the primary responsibility for protecting their children from all potential harm. When choosing a nursery, daycare center or school, parents should inspect the building and grounds to make sure there are no areas where children play or work that are “off limits” to parents. Such facilities should have a policy that welcomes parents to visit the center or school without prior appointment. For particular help you may call: Mrs. Gloria Galarza, Coordinator Protecting our Children Program, phone: (323) 462-3646, or Sr. Sheila McNiff, Director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Changes in behavior, extreme mood swings, withdrawal, fearlessness, excessive crying, bed-wetting, nightmares, fear of going to bed, sleep disorders and a fear of certain places, people or activities can be signs that a child has been traumatized by sexual abuse. Through its Safeguard the Children program, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles provides abuse prevention training for parents, teachers and others who work with children. This training helps adults to identify and prevent behaviors that may lead to abuse. It also provides parents and others with techniques for talking to children who may be at risk of being abused by others. Contact your parish Safeguard the Children Committee for more information about an abuse prevention training program in your area.
STAND AND BE COUNTED: NEW MEMBERS WELCOME: Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. To so clearly state your Catholic commitment in all its dimensions brings you advantages, recognition, and responsibilities of many kinds. Being a registered parishioner makes things much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and even funerals.
We are often asked to provide affidavits for baptismal and confirmation sponsors. We can only do this if a person is a registered, active, and contributing member in our parish. How do you know if you are already registered? A registered parishioner receives all parish mailings. So, are you a registered parishioner? If not, please consider registering. Registration forms are always available at rectory office. Please complete one today if you would like to join our community.

A SEASON OF JOY: “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42). This first line of today’s first reading sets the tone as this fifty-day celebration of Easter opens before us. Today we listen to the teachings of three apostles–Luke, Peter, and John–who remind us that even though we have not seen Christ, we nonetheless are filled with joy as we place our belief in his saving death and resurrection. Each week during the Easter season we will gather as a community of faith to find strength and support from our God and from one another. Each week we will gather to break bread and offer the great prayer of thanksgiving, actions that will manifest the very presence of the risen Christ in our midst. Let us be open to the wonders of this season of joy. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Did You Know? Learn to “stop” inappropriate activity before it happens
Child safety tip: Teach your child to respect the word “stop!” Teach your preschooler that “stop” means “stop,” and that your child has the right to stop people from touching his or her body. Obviously, exceptions will have to be made for doctors and parents, but even parents must listen when a child doesn’t want to be tickled or hugged anymore. Reinforcing this excellent lesson gives your child the power to recognize — and to stop — “bad touching” by others if it should happen.
Sabe Usted?

Did You Know? How Old Does a Child Need to Be in Order to Stay Alone?
Don’t assume that when your child understands what you’re saying, he’s ready to walk out the door by himself. Besides the fact that many states have laws against leaving children of certain ages alone (for example, younger than 12), experts say children shouldn’t be left by themselves until they’re capable of fighting off an abductor or handling a crisis situation. Experts also say children do not have the mental maturity to cross busy streets by themselves until they’re about 10 or 12 years old (did you know that pedestrian injuries rank third in child fatalities, behind traffic accidents and drowning?). Finally, parents who are certain their young children would never walk away with a stranger will be shocked to learn that studies show they probably will. Stay alert and vigilant, even if you believe your child is aware of possible dangers from others. For particular help you may call: Mrs. Gloria Galarza, Coordinator Protecting our Children Program, phone: (323) 462-3646, or Sr. Sheila McNiff, Director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Sabe Usted?

– REFLECTIONS - REFLECCIONES –

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Easter is a full two weeks earlier this year than last. Why does the date wobble around the calendar so? The way of calculating the date was set by the Emperor Constantine in 325. The decision ended a very bitter controversy in the church. Some people wanted to synchronize the Pasch with Passover on the fourteenth day of the Jewish month Nissan, and their opponents wanted it after the Passover was complete, on the Sunday after the first full moon of springtime. The ecclesiastical rules do not exactly connect with the astronomical rules. The emperor squashed the hopes of the quartodecimans, as the fans of 14 Nissan were called, and chose Sunday.
The traditional rule is that Easter is the first Sunday after the first ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or after the vernal equinox, the fourteenth day of the new moon, and later than March 21. Thus, Easter wobbles between March 22 and April 25.
The actual tables and methods for computing the date are extraordinarily detailed, with subtle variations and mind-bending exceptions and charts with “golden numbers,” “dominical letters,” and “epacts” measuring leap years. In 1954 and 1962 the ecclesiastical calculations actually overrode the astronomical new moons and bumped Easter back a month! Today, there is a movement in the World Council of Churches (Protestants and Orthodox) for all Christians to combine their celebrations, based on the star charts for the Jerusalem skies. The last time all Christians celebrated together was at the dawn of the millennium in 2001. In principle, the Catholic Church is open to an ecumenical agreement on a fixed date for Easter, but we desire a unanimous decision from the World Council. –Rev. James Field, (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

REJOICE AND BE GLAD: “This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad” (Psalm 118:24). Let us remember that these words of today’s responsorial psalm are not only sung from the hearts of those gathered in our parish. They are also sung by the poor in tiny barrios throughout Central and South America. They are sung by those denied religious freedom in our world; these Christians lift their voices in clandestine places of worship. These words are sung by people who have lost loved ones to acts of terrorism and war around the globe. Even in the midst of conflict and division, Christians still come together to declare that poverty, loneliness, violence, and division will never, ever have as much power as the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Indeed, let us rejoice this day and be glad! (c) pyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

— Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Why does such life flow from death? Because the cross gives way to empty tomb, from whose depths the life springs. Only in Jesus’ resurrection is the meaning of his death fully revealed. His conquest of the grave transforms his suffering and sacrifice into a mighty river that flows from this world into the next, where the fleeting life of earth converges at last with the eternal life of heaven. Paul Thigpen; Last Words: Final Thoughts of Catholics Saint and Sinners

SEEING CHRIST CLEARLY: We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul’s letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us “behold the Lamb of God” before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we–his Body through baptism, the church–now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

FLOWERS FOR THE ALTAR OF REPOSE: Easter lilies…Calla lilies…will be welcome to embellish our church this Easter season. Flower Fund donations may be made by placing your contribution in one of the special “Easter Flower envelopes” found behind the pews. You can either drop it in the offering basket or take it to the rectory.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: now we have come to the center of the Christian year, beginning with today, Passion Sunday, Holy Week, and culminating in the Pasch, the Sacred Triduum. Some have called the culminating event in this week’s journey of faith “The Three Days of Easter.” The origins of many of our observances, including today’s blessing of palms and solemn entry into the church, hearken back to old Jerusalem. In the late fourth century, a woman living a consecrated life in southern France made a four-year pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There, she encountered the rich liturgies of the city, bursting with Christians. She was a keen observer, and fortunately for us wrote vivid letters of her experience to a circle of women friends she calls her sisters. By the time of her journey, it is clear that even some catechumens were undertaking the dangerous journey so that they could be formed at the very site of the events of Christ’s passion and rising. At the heart of the pilgrim experience were processions, such as today’s joyous procession to the Mount of Olives, and brilliant catechesis from the bishop every day, as well as intense fasting and prayer. When you resolve to keep this week holy in your own life, and especially when you commit to participate in the full Triduum with worship in church and fasting at home, a very ancient tradition is within your grasp. –Rev. James Field, (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Did You Know? Test your knowledge: True or False?
Child sexual abusers are only attracted to children and are not capable of appropriate sexual relationships? False. While there is a small subset of child sexual abusers who are exclusively attracted to children, the majority of the individuals who sexually abuse children are (or have previously been) attracted to adults. Child predators are difficult to identify precisely because they look just like everyone else. In some cases, they are our most trusted friends and even our family members. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles offers a wealth of information on child safety and child safety training programs for adults and young people. For more information, please visit: http://archdiocese.la. For particular help you may call: Mrs. Gloria Galarza, Coordinator Protecting our Children Program, phone: (323) 462-3646, or Sr. Sheila McNiff, Director of Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

JESUS’ MINISTRY SUMMARIZED: The story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead is the single longest story (apart from the Passion) in the Gospel of John. In it we find a summary of most of Jesus’ ministry. We see his very human nature as he is moved by Martha and Mary’s sorrows and as he himself weeps at the tomb of Lazarus. He is the wisdom of God’s Word made flesh as he explains to his followers that the death of Lazarus will serve as a sign of the glory of God. He crowns the miracles he works in John’s Gospel (which began with the most “human” miracle of making new wine at Cana’s wedding) by raising Lazarus from the dead–a “preview,” if you will, of his own death and resurrection to come. This portrait of Jesus reminds us, as we near the end of our Lenten journey, that he is with us, knows us, understands us in every moment of our lives. He knows the joy of our human feasting, he knows the sorrow of our weeping. As we prepare to walk with him through the days of Holy Week, we are filled with faith that–through Christ–God’s glory will be with us in every moment of our lives and–with Christ–in our life everlasting.
Prayer to st. Joseph
Oh St. Joseph whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires.
Oh St. Joseph do assist me by your powerful intercession and obtain for me from your Divine Son all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ, Our Lord so that having engaged here below your heavenly power I may offer my Thanksgiving and Homage to the most Loving of Fathers. Oh St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press him in my name and kiss his fine Head for me, and ask him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls, pray for us. Amen.

Did You Know? Test your knowledge of abuse prevention
True or false: It is common for both child and adult victims of sexual assault to wait some time before telling someone about the abuse. True. It is common for victims of sexual assault to wait some time before telling someone. When the person was assaulted as a child, he or she may wait years or decades. The reasons for this are numerous: victims may want to deny the fact that someone they trusted could do this to them; they may want to just put it behind them; they may believe the myth that they caused the assault by their behavior; or they may fear how other people will react to the truth. For more information on learning how you can help ensure the safety of children, please visit: http://archdiocese.la.
