For the birds

By Fr. James Doogan, S.J. on 16-04-2008 | Diary of a Priest |

As I have mentioned before I had 2 lovebirds. One, Spiffy is predominately green; the other RIP was yellow with a cool teal stripe.

I went to the store to pick up a yellow bird. However, when I saw two yellow two month olds snuggled together. I didn’t have the heart to separate them so I got both. It was in a store in Highland Park and they were a steal.

A few hours later I ran into the Church Organist, Hyunju. Emma is her lovebird and is hard to handle, extremely aggressive, and bites incessantly and hard. I thought I could help, so she gave it to me.

Emma — I renamed Queeny, is partners with Spiffy. She pushes him around, but they are always preening and feeding each other, so there must be a pay off. The two yellow ones I refer to as the twins because I always deal with them as one – and they are difficult to distinguish. They are always together so they are as easy as one bird and their dispositions are great. The little clowns’ names are Woodstock and Butters.

I am still learning about birds. Queeny started to molt - or did she. She had bald patched. I check with an online community devoted to lovebirds. They assured me that this was unusual and should be brought to a vet. I called Hyunju and she took Emma/Queeny home with her. Spiffy is already missing her.

The grade school kids love the birds. They visited our garden about a month ago. I gave them soil, a cup and a bulb. They watched the bulbs grow in class and came back over recently and planted them. It was a big help and they were so excited about it. Father Mike accused me of being like Tom Sawer - getting paid for letting other kids paint the fence.

I bring the birds out when the students are here. They love them. Before the birds we treat the squirrels as pets. I let the kids name them; Elvis and Pricilla. They still ask about them because the squirrels stay in our garden, digging up the plants. — That’s another story.

I hope Queeny gets well soon, Padre. Any chance of adding the bird pictures in this post?
    Cheers.
